SUMMARY:Seminar on Tuesday\, May 27\, 2008
DESCRIPTION:Seminar: Analysis of a Loss Network Model\n\n\nMay 26\, 2008 – 4:27am \n\n\n\nFull Title:\nAnalysis of a Loss Network Model for Performance Evaluation and Capacity Planning of a Neonatal Network in the UK\n\n\nSpeaker:\nMd. Asaduzzaman\, MSc\n\n\n\nPhD Student \nHealth and Social Care Modelling Group \nSchool of Informatics\, University of Westminster London\, UK\n\n\nDate/Time:\nTuesday\, May 27\, 2008\, 1200PM\n\n\nVenue:\nISRT Seminar Room\n\n\n\n  \n\nABSTRACT\nEvery year in the UK\, 8-13% babies are admitted to a neonatal unit and 2-3% require intensive and/or high dependency care. Neonatal care in the UK has been organised through ‘Managed clinical networks’ (MCN’s) since 2004. In England\, there are 182 neonatal units organised in 24 networks. The baby charity BLISS reported that over a six month period\, neonatal units were shut to new admissions for an average of 24 days\, and 10% units exceeded their intensive care capacity for more than 50 days. The National Audit Office reported that capacity and staffing problems at unit level continue to constrain neonatal services. The main aim of this paper is to develop a model to assist with performance measure and capacity planning of such a neonatal network. We develop a continuous-time Markov chain model with overflow to capture movement of patients into neonatal units of a network using loss network framework. We then derive expression for overflow and rejection probabilities to measure performance of the network based on decomposition approach. The model is applied to a neonatal network in North Central London. Decision on number of cot can be made for specific level of overflow and admission rejection probabilities at each neonatal unit of the network.

DESCRIPTION:Seminar : Actuarial study Program\n\n\nMarch 26\, 2008 – 7:56pm \n\n\n\nFull Title:\nConcept paper on “Actuarial study Program”\n\n\nSpeaker:\nA.K.M. Elias Hussain\n\n\n\nAdditional Managing Director\, Sandhani Life Insurance Co. Ltd.\, Bangladesh\n\n\nDate/Time:\nFriday\, March 28\, 2008\, 1200PM\n\n\nVenue:\nISRT Seminar Room\n\n\n\n  \n\nABSTRACT\nThe actuarial profession recognized and appreciates the exceptional degree of public trust that is bestowed upon it and\, accordingly\, acknowledges its corresponding responsibility to fulfill its duty to the public by maintaining a high level of professionalism among its members. Candidates must successfully complete rigorous educational programs and achieve significant levels of appropriate experience before being admitted to membership in the actuarial profession. They are required by their membership organizations to meet high standards of professional integrity and competence. The establishment and maintenance of uncompromising professional standards helps actuaries maintain their reputation for being responsible\, competent\, objective and ethical. In Bangladesh\, there are about 73 banking and non-banking financial institutes and 62 life and non-life insurance companies are operating business. Apart from\, Govt. is also handling retirement benefit\, gratuity benefit\, provident fund benefits for its employees where actuarial application is very much important for the financial management. The most important part of these activities is being done by the actuaries from out side Bangladesh.

SUMMARY:Seminar on Saturday\, December 1\, 2007
DESCRIPTION:Seminar : Time to Surgical Consultation and Hip/ Knee Replacement Surgery for Osteoarthritis Patients\n\n\nNovember 28\, 2007 – 8:20pm \n\n\n\nFull Title:\nEffect of Socio-demographic Factors on Time to Surgical Consultation and Hip/ Knee Replacement Surgery for Osteoarthritis Patients in British Columbia\, Canada\n\n\nSpeaker:\nM Mushfiqur Rahman\, MSc\n\n\n\nArthritis Research Centre of Canada\, Vancouver\, BC\, Canada\n\n\nDate/Time:\nSaturday\, December 1\, 2007\, 1200PM\n\n\nVenue:\nISRT Seminar Room\n\n\n\n  \n\nABSTRACT\nPURPOSE: Our objective was to conduct separate survival analyses of time to the first surgical consultation and time to the first total joint (knee or hip) arthroplasty (TJA) for osteoarthritis (OA) patients using population based administrative data. \nMETHODS: All hospital admissions as well as office visits covered by the Medical Services Plan of British Columbia\, Canada\, for the fiscal years 1991/2 to 2003/4 were analyzed. OA patients were identified by at least one visit to a health professional or one hospitalization with an ICD-9 code of 715. TJA cases were identified using the procedure codes 935 and 934.1 for hip and knee\, respectively. Socioeconomic status (SES) was ranked from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) based on mean household income for the patient’s area of residence (census enumeration area). A cohort of 34\,851 OA patients (age ≥ 20 years)\, diagnosed by a health professional other than orthopedic surgeon (OS) (91% by general practitioners) in 1996/7\, were followed up to 2004 for their first surgical consultation. A total of 9\,635 adult OA cases\, who had their first OS visit in 1996/7\, were followed up for their first TJA in 8 years. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards (PH) models were used to evaluate the effects. \nRESULTS: OS consultation rates for newly diagnosed OA cases were lower for women compared with men (hazard ratio\, HR = 0.86\, p < 0.01) (Table). After adjusting for age and gender\, patients with lower SES had significantly lower HR of OS consultations compared to those with higher SES (HR = 0.89\, p=0.02\, for the lowest SES quintile). Following an OS consultation\, SES was not a significant predictor of the first TJA. The interaction between age and gender was significant for patients who had a TJA after an OS consultation. Compared with men age <70\, the HR for women age <70\, men age ≥70 and women age ≥70 were 1.5\, 3.3 and 3.0\, respectively (p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Women diagnosed with OA were somewhat less likely than men to see an orthopedic surgeon. Among younger patients\, women were more likely than men to undergo TJA following a surgical consultation but the reverse was true among older patients. OA patients with low SES consulted orthopedic surgeons less frequently than those in a high SES category.

DESCRIPTION:Seminar : Statistics in Decision Making\n\n\nNovember 21\, 2007 – 8:24pm \n\n\n\nFull Title:\nStatistics in Decision Making – Sample and Non-Sample Issues\n\n\nSpeaker:\nShahjahan Khan\, PhD\n\n\n\nDepartment of Mathematics and Computing\nAustralian Centre for Sustainable Catchments\nUniversity of Southern Queensland\nToowoomba\, Queensland\, AUSTRALIA\n\n\nDate/Time:\nSaturday\, November 24\, 2007\, 1200PM\n\n\nVenue:\nISRT Seminar Room\n\n\n\n  \n\nABSTRACT\nIn statistical analyses estimation of unknown parameter(s) and hypotheses testing are common practices. But all estimators or tests don’t have equally good statistical properties. Hence the users are required selecting the best estimator or test from the available alternatives. Both parameter estimation and hypothesis testing require sample data. A natural expectation is that inclusion of relevant non-sample prior information in the estimation and testing process would result in improving the quality of statistical decisions. This presentation demonstrates that the preliminary test and shrinkage estimators often have better statistical properties than the commonly used exclusive sample data based estimators. The notion of inclusion of non-sample prior information is extended to the testing regime. It is evident that the use of non-sample prior information increases the power of detecting any false null hypothesis. Also the chance of rejecting a correct null hypothesis\, in other words the size of the test\, is minimized by testing one parameter after pre-testing another parameter.

DESCRIPTION:Seminar : Indoor Air Pollution\, Child and Mother Health in Bangladesh\n\n\nAugust 12\, 2007 – 10:08pm \n\n\n\nFull Title:\nIndoor Air Pollution and Its Impact on Child and Mother Health in Bangladesh\n\n\nSpeaker:\nMohammad Alauddin\, PhD\n\n\n\nWagner College\, Staten Island\, New York\, USA\n\n\nDate/Time:\nMonday\, August 13\, 2007\, 1200PM\n\n\nVenue:\nISRT Seminar Room\n\n\n\n  \n\nABSTRACT\nAbout 3 billion people on earth have no access to clean fuel for household cooking and lighting. According to the World Health Organization (WHO)\, worldwide 1.5 million deaths occur annually due to exposure to indoor air pollutants from the burning of solid fuels in household cook stoves. Indoor air pollution has been receiving significant attention from scientific community than its counterpart ambient air pollution in recent years for its role in infant mortality in developing countries. In Bangladesh\, the indoor air pollution (IAP) has been recognized as the major cause of death among children of age five year and less. According to recent statistics from World Health Organization (WHO)\, IAP is the major cause of acute respiratory infections (ARI) and acute lower respiratory infections (ALRI) among women and children in rural and poor slum households in developing countries. Bangladesh is no exception to these cases. The primary pollutants are particulate matters (PM2.5)\, carbon monoxide (CO)\, volatile organic compounds (VOC) and trace elements resulting from emissions from inefficient cook stoves in poorly ventilated households. We have carried out air quality monitoring in slum households in Dhaka\, Saidpur and Parbatipur. Interventions for exposure to smoke\, PM2.5\, CO\, VOC include installation of efficient cook stove to reduce fuel cost as well as improving air quality to the WHO acceptable standards. Our recent data from Bangladesh will be discussed in this presentation.

DESCRIPTION:Seminar : Observer variability for bounded scores: Inter-surgeon variability\n\n\nAugust 3\, 2007 – 10:11pm \n\n\n\nFull Title:\nObserver variability for bounded scores: Inter-surgeon variability in priority assessments of clinical vignettes\n\n\nSpeaker:\nMd. Monir Hossain\, PhD\n\n\n\nUniversity of  South Carolina\, Columbia\n\n\nDate/Time:\nSaturday\, August 4\, 2007\, 1200\n\n\nVenue:\nISRT Seminar Room\n\n\n\n  \n\nABSTRACT\nMotivated by a study of inter-surgeon variability in assessments of surgical priority scores\, we develop a hierarchical Bayesian modeling approach to the analysis of studies of observer variation for bounded integer-valued scoring systems. The hierarchical model structure accounts for the correlated nature of the study design which involves multiple raters and multiple scoring tools. A latent priority score serves to link assessments of the same vignette. We account for the tendency for variability to be less at the extremes than in the middle of the scoring range by modeling within surgeon variation using a beta-binomial distribution and between surgeon variation with a logit-normal distribution. Interpretable inferences can be obtained by focussing on descriptors of the distributions of scores and expected scores implied by the fitted model. The combination of hierarchical modeling and an inferential focus on distributions of responses\, or expected responses\, provides a comprehensive and flexible approach to the analysis and reporting of observer variability studies. An appealing feature of the approach adopted is that inferences can be obtained for scoring tools not directly evaluated but deterministically linked to studied tools. This provides a framework for post-study exploration of the impact on variability of alternative strategies for constraining scores.

DESCRIPTION:Seminar : Robust linear model selection based on Least Angle Regression\n\n\nMay 26\, 2007 – 1:59am \n\n\n\nFull Title:\nRobust linear model selection based on Least Angle Regression\n\n\nSpeaker:\nJafar A Khan\, PhD\n\n\n\nDepartment of Statistics\, University of Dhaka\, Bangladesh\n\n\nDate/Time:\nSunday\, May 27\, 2007\, 1200\n\n\nVenue:\nISRT Seminar Room\n\n\n\n  \n\nABSTRACT\nAbstract We consider the problem of building a linear prediction model when the number of candidate covariates is large and the dataset contains a fraction of outliers and other contaminations that are difficult to visualize and clean. We aim at predicting the future non-outlying cases. Therefore\, we need methods that are robust and scalable at the same time. \nOur two-step model building procedure consists of sequencing and segmentation. In sequencing\, we order the covariates and the first m covariates form a reduced set for further consideration. The segmentation step carefully examines subsets of the covariates in the reduced set to select the final prediction model. \nWe need a suitable step–by–step algorithm to sequence the covariates. Since Forward Selection (FS) is aggressive\, we focus on Least Angle Regression (LARS)\, a powerful algorithm recently proposed by Efron\, Hastie\, Johnstone and Tibshirani (2004). We review LARS\, and explain one approach to its robustification.

A functional regression model is used\, based on a non-linear relationship with both additive and multiplicative error terms. The function is derived as the expected value of a pixel\, given that values are censored at 65535\, the maximum detectable intensity for double precision scanning software. Maximum likelihood estimation based on a Cauchy distribution is used to fit the model\, which is able to estimate gene expressions taking account of outliers and the systematic bias caused by signal censoring of highly expressed genes. We have applied the method to experimental data. Simulation studies suggest that the model can estimate the true gene expression with negligible bias.

ATS’ are very common in cancer\, AIDS and psychiatric clinical trials. In recent years a number of clinical trials sponsored by the National Institute of Health have attempted to compare various ATS’. As a consequence\, biostatisticians had to focus on deriving appropriate methodologies for statistical inference. In this talk\, we discuss available methods for statistical inference for survival data from clinical trials comparing ATS’. We present a simulation study and a data analysis with a leukemia data set. Directions on future research are also presented in the discussion.

A proposal for an unified approach for estimation and test with the assumption that the population follows the g and k quantile function distribution is made. The effect of the shape parameters on the simple RSS estimator of the population mean is also studied using the same assumption.

DESCRIPTION:Seminar on Statistical Independence\n\n\nJanuary 26\, 2009 – 4:38am \n\n\n\nFull Title:\nExpository talk on Statistical Independence : An Insight\n\n\nSpeaker:\nA.H. Joarder\, PhD\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate/Time:\nTuesday\, July 25\, 2006\, 12PM\n\n\nVenue:\nISRT Seminar Room\n\n\n\n  \n\nABSTRACT\nStatistical independence is explained in the context of a 2 x 2 contingency table. An inequality among events provides new insight into statistical independence. In turn it is found that statistical independence and linear dependence are equivalent in a square contingency table.

DESCRIPTION:Seminar on Some Ridge Regression Estimators\n\n\nJanuary 26\, 2009 – 5:19am \n\n\n\nFull Title:\nOn Some Ridge Regression Estimators and Their Applications\n\n\nSpeaker:\nB.M.G. Kibria\, PhD\n\n\n\nFlorida International University\, Miami\, USA\n\n\nDate/Time:\nSunday\, July 23\, 2006\, 12PM\n\n\nVenue:\nISRT Seminar Room\n\n\n\n  \n\nABSTRACT\nThe classical least squares procedures can produce estimate having a large mean square error (MSE) when the explanatory variables are highly correlated. The estimation of the regression parameters for the linear regression model with ill-conditioned explanatory variables are discussed in this paper. We propose some improved estimators\, namely\, the unrestricted ridge regression estimator\, restricted ridge regression estimator\, preliminary test ridge regression estimator\, shrinkage ridge regression estimator\, and positive rule ridge regression estimators in this talk. The performances of the proposed estimators are compared based on the quadratic bias and risk function under both null and alternative hypotheses\, which specify certain restric tions on the regression parameters. The conditions of superiority of the proposed estimators for departure and ridge parameters are given. It is demonstrated that unlike the positive rule shrinkage (PR) estimator which dominates both unrestricted and shrinkage estimators\, the positive rule ridge regression estimators (PRRRE) utilizes both sample and non-sample infor mation but does not outperform the unrestricted and shrinkage ridge regression estimators for an ill-conditioned data. As an application a real life example will be discussed.
