ISRT alumni Syed Shahnewaz Ali (Batch 15) received the best young statistician award at the ISI Regional Statistics Conference 2014. Below the report on it.
The International Statistical Institute (ISI) South East Asia (SEA) Regional Network organized the ISI Regional Statistics Conference 2014 (ISI-RSC 2014) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia during 16-19 November 2014. The conference programme comprised about 70 discussion sessions with over 200 papers presented on topics that covered statistical theory and methodology, application of statistics in economics, finance and banking, official statistics and data management, and statistical computing. To promote and recognize the participation of young statisticians in statistics conferences, the Scientific Programme Committee of the ISI RSC 2014 had presented the Young Statistician Award to the authors of the three best papers submitted to the conference.
There were 26 short-listed finalists, and among them, the first prize went to the paper ‘Quadratic Discriminant Classifier for Moment-based Face Recognition’. This paper was presented in the invited session ‘Clustering and Classification with Applications’ by Tamanna Howlader, an Associate Professor at ISRT. The paper was based on the research work of her M.S. thesis student Syed Shahnewaz Ali. The award was announced by the Deputy Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia and was received by Tamanna from the Chairman of the Young Statistician Award Committee during the ISI RSC 2014 Closing Ceremony.
